Freedom Farmers Market Pickups
One of the various volunteer activities we did were “Farmers Market Pick Up Days.”
We would head to “Intown Collaborative Ministries,” a local food kitchen and church, to pick up aprons and bins for the produce.
From there, we would head to “Freedom Farmers Market,” where we would go around to various produce vendors and ask if they had any leftover and/or produce that was about to spoil that they would like to donate.
Once all the produce was collected, we would head back to Intown Collaborative Ministries where the produce would be weighed and stored to give out the next day!
Doghead Farm Work
Another volunteer activity we participated in was “Doghead Farm Workdays.”
Doghead Farm is a local farm owned by Concrete Jungle, where they plant and harvest fruits and vegetables.
On the farm days we volunteered at, the focus was the maintenance of the farm, and getting it ready to plant more produce.
The first day, we focused on removing weeds from all the plant beds and the area around all the fruit trees that are in the farm. We then put new soil on the beds and new mulch around the trees.
The other farm day was focused on terrace farming, where we leveled a hillside ground in specific sections so that the flat areas stacked like stairs.
These days were typically more physically demanding, but they provided us with good insight on how to maintain a farm using sustainable farming techniques!
